| Summary | The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the STAT family of transcription factors. In response to cytokines and growth factors, STAT family members are phosphorylated by the receptor associated kinases, and then form homo- or heterodimers that translocate to the cell nucleus where they act as transcription activators. This protein is activated by, and mediates the responses of many cell ligands, such as IL2, IL3, IL7 GM-CSF, erythropoietin, thrombopoietin, and different growth hormones. Activation of this protein in myeloma and lymphoma associated with a TEL/JAK2 gene fusion is independent of cell stimulus and has been shown to be essential for tumorigenesis. The mouse counterpart of this gene is found to induce the expression of BCL2L1/BCL-X(L), which suggests the antiapoptotic function of this gene in cells. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2013] |

PMID: 11110883
Signal transducers and activators of transcription (STATs) comprise a family of cytoplasmic proteins that are activated by and mediate gene expression in response to extracellular effectors that target receptors with intrinsic kinase activity or receptors to which Janus kinases (JAK) are bound. The receptor-bound STAT is phosphorylated, then dimerizes with other STAT proteins and translocates to the nucleus to mediate specific gene expression. The expression of three members of this family, STAT1, STAT5A and STAT5B, is upregulated during differentiation of cultured preadipocytes (Stephens et al. 1996).evidence indicates that the differentiation-dependent induction of STAT1, STAT5A and STAT5B is regulated downstream of PPARg in the differentiation paradigm (Fig. 2)(Stephens et al. 2000).
PMID: 17372307
STAT5A forms a complex with GR in the nucleus in the early phase of differentiation ,
PMID: 21427703
Using ChIP-seq analysis, we have recently shown that STAT5A and GR do in fact co-occupy multiple chromatin regions early in adipogenesis.
PMID: 17242167
Studies have shown that the GH-activated STAT5 proteins can induce PPARγ expression in 3T3-L1 cells and C3H10T1/2 cells
PMID: 21494231
Recent observations have shown that ectopic STAT5A expression can confer the adipogenic capabilities of Swiss 3T3 fibroblasts in athymic mice
